TGS was the civil subcontractor to GPC on the T16 and Z4B Pender Garden project. The crew consisted of a Project Manager, site supervisors, a shuttering team, a concreting team that also carried out power float finishing, a precast paneling and bubble deck laying team, steelfixers and brick layers.
The project commenced in February 2013 and was completed in September 2014. At its peak there was over 40 skilled personnel with another 10 helping hands (semi-skilled labour).
The T16 building consisted of an eight story above the ground level and four underground levels. The Z4B building has a four underground levels and one story above the ground level. Total area of both blocks is approximately 1400m² per floor.
A total of 6300m³ of concrete were poured, 11,250m² predalls laid, approximately 12,500m² of brick wall laid and more than 370 tons of steel reinforcement installed on site.
This was the 1st project in Malta that BubbleDeck technology . This is innovative system was used in three levels of underground parking totalling approx. 3,500 square metres. The BubbleDeck slab system is not dissimilar to other materials used in construction, like wood and steel and other pre-cast concrete elements (such as planki and predalle), as these pre-cast concrete slabs are delivered to the construction site already containing the required bubbles (hollow, plastic balls) and reinforcing steel.
This facilitates the efficient placement of these structural elements, consequently saving time, manpower and, of course, money. The fact that these structural elements are prepared in a manufacturing plant ensures better workmanship and minimises the required input from the workforce on site. The inclusion of the bubbles within the core of the concrete slab allows for a lighter structure and therefore less construction material within an overall lighter structure. The lighter structure is enables for larger spans, which in turn reduce the number of load-bearing elements (columns and foundations) required. Since BubbleDeck technology is a flat slab system, no beams are needed, thus increasing invaluable internal headroom.
